Some general information about driving schools and driving instructors.
Ok, so just exactly what are driving instructors, what do they do and why do most people use them? Let’s first start off by looking at your general driving instructors in Widnes or around the Uk to be fair.
Firstly, to qualify as a driving instructor, we have to go through a training program. These training programs are generally delivered by specialist driver training companies such as ourselves. The training company will have specialist staff who are trained to a very high standard and have probably undergone lots of continued professional development. So much so that there is a qualification called ORDIT that an instructor can apply for registration if they want to train people to become driving instructors. You can read more about ORDIT here.
The qualification process – In order to become a fully qualified driving instructor, there are three exams we have to take and pass. These are called Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.
The Part 1 exam is the theory and hazard perception test. In a way, it’s similar to the learner theory and hazard perception test but our is a lot more in-depth. The theory test is broken down into four bands, these bands are:
- Road procedure
- Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
- Driving test, disabilities, and the law
- Publications and instructional techniques
Once you have successfully passed the Part 1 exam, you can then apply to the DVSA to take the second exam, the Part 2.
On the Part 2 exam, you have to demonstrate to the examiner a good level of driving skill. You’ll have to show the examiner all of the following:
- Expert handling of the controls
- Use of correct road procedure
- Anticipation of the actions of other road users and then taking appropriate action
- Sound judgement of distance, speed and timing
- Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users
- Diving in an environmentally-friendly manner
You’ll drive in varying road and traffic conditions, including motorways or dual carriageways where possible.
You will also be asked to carry out two reversing exercises and will be asked to carry out an independent driving for approximately 20 minutes.
Once you’ve successfully passed the Part 2 exam, you can then apply to take the third and final exam, the Part 3 which is a test of your instructional ability.
On the Part 3, a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) examiner will watch you give a client-centred driving lesson lasting about 45 minutes (1 hour post Covid-19) to one of your pupils. Your pupil must drive for at least 40 minutes of the lesson.
At the start of the lesson, discuss the goals for the lesson and risk management with your pupil. At the end of the lesson, give your pupil time to reflect on their performance.
The examiner will look for evidence that you meet the national standard for driver and rider training.
Once you’ve successfully passed all 3 exams, they can then apply to the DVSA to have their name put on a register of Approved Driving Instructors, hence where the initials ADI come from. A driving instructor can either work for a company such as ourselves or they can set up independently and work for themselves and start offering driving lessons in Widnes or their local area. It’s absolutely their choice. Many driving instructors choose to work for a company for their first year or so once they first qualify, learning the ropes as so to speak.
Driving Schools in Widnes
In essence, all driving schools in Widnes or driving instructors in Widnes to be precise, is a person who has passed the DVSA qualifying exams to become a driving instructor and has committed to run a business whereby teaching people how to drive. A driving school can be either a single person or a group of people. For example, if you have a look at some driving instructors in Widnes you will probably see individual school cars with their name on a roof box. Or you may see a group of cars such as BSM or ourselves floating around the town.
A driving school will generally teach people to drive to pass their driving test but they could also have students who can already drive for example foreign students who can already drive but just need to exchange their driving licence for a UK one.
In essence, driving instructors or driving schools don’t just teach people how to drive, we teach people how to drive safely for life, not just how to pass a driving test. If you’re looking for driving lessons in Widnes get in touch.
A lot of driving schools can offer a variety of courses such as intensive driving courses or sometimes known as crash driving courses.
